E-Com Fabrication: Using Internet, Enabled Smart Phone Scanners to Produce 3D Printed Tooling for Custom Fitted, Bio-Fiber Reinforced Thermoset Plastic Furniture

Silver’s project, in partnership with Automated Dynamics, received funding for $10,000 to explore the use of smartphone scanning technologies and 3D printing in creating mass-customizable, eco-friendly furniture.

The project seeks to utilize the increasing accessibility of high-quality spatial scanning to create full-body scans. These scans would then be uploaded and used to create highly-customizable bio-fiber reinforced thermoset plastic furniture by the use of 3D printing technology. In the end, the team hopes to demonstrate the possibility of using smartphone scanning technology and accessible 3D printing to build quality, customizable and recyclable furniture as well as potential use in other applications.
